The 21st century is also called as digital age. We can see that this categorization is true, that in day-to-day life people both young and old are hooked to their devices. Dependency on these electronic devices has a significant effect on humanity, especially on children. Usually, people below age 14 are characterized as children. And most of the Indian households provide their youngest ones with a personal smartphone, either thinking that it is an essential component for education or just to show to the public (especially relatives) that they are rich.
But it very clear that parents have minimum to zero knowledge of the powerful effects these devices have on their children. But on the contrary research made in this field suggests that effects caused by technology, particularly internet, on children is at an alarming rate harmful to the cognitive development and attention span in children.
Usually, children love to spend time in outdoors. This simple taste for outdoor activities keeps children physically and mentally fortified through exposure to various stimuli that contribute to their wholesome development. This has been the traditional way in which a typical child grows. But after the emergence of smartphones which has intruded each and every household all the over the world, this traditional way of growth and development is altered radically.
We cannot completely disregard the influence of internet as a negative one. Internet has many positive effects as it is very much useful in acquiring knowledge of any subject worldwide with a grasp of resources across nations. And also it helps in connecting people across nations, which was of immense value especially during the pandemic times. Internet offers seamless and efficient flow of daily tasks and helps our children many other activities.
But in the contrary the negative side effects of internet easily outgrows or out wins the above-mentioned positives. This is a concern, as most of our kids are spending majority of their time on smartphones.
Usage of internet affects the attention span of children.
The increasing use of the internet has a significant impact on the attention span of children. Constant exposure to fast-paced content, instant notifications, and endless streams of information can make it difficult for them to focus on tasks that require sustained concentration. Instead of engaging deeply with one activity, children may become accustomed to quickly shifting their attention from one stimulus to another, which can reduce their ability to concentrate in classrooms or during reading and problem-solving activities. Over time, this pattern may hinder the development of patience, critical thinking, and long-term focus, skills that are essential for academic success and personal growth.
Spending more time in internet reduces social interactions and affects relationships.
Spending excessive time on the internet can gradually reduce face-to-face social interactions and weaken personal relationships. When individuals prioritize online activities over in-person communication, they may miss opportunities to build emotional connections, share experiences, and nurture trust with family and friends. Over time, this imbalance can lead to feelings of isolation, misunderstandings, and a decline in the quality of relationships. While digital platforms provide convenience and entertainment, relying too heavily on them often diminishes the depth and authenticity of human bonds that are essential for emotional well-being and social harmony.
Excessive use of the internet has been linked to depression and other psychological difficulties, particularly when it replaces healthy social interaction and balanced daily routines. Constant exposure to online content can foster feelings of inadequacy, loneliness, or anxiety, especially when individuals compare themselves to idealized images or lifestyles presented on social media. Over time, this can disrupt emotional stability, reduce self-esteem, and contribute to abnormal patterns of thought and behaviour. While the internet offers valuable resources and entertainment, unchecked usage may negatively affect mental health, making it important to maintain moderation and prioritize real-world connections and activities.
A Way Out – Solution
This shows the importance of making parents and children aware about the dangers of internet and useful measures in overcoming grave issues in the cyber world. Allowing children limited and controlled access to the internet is crucial in protecting them from its potential dangers. By setting boundaries on screen time and monitoring the type of content they engage with, parents and educators can ensure that children benefit from the educational and creative opportunities the internet provides without being exposed to harmful influences. Controlled access helps prevent issues such as addiction, exposure to inappropriate material, and the decline of social and emotional development. In this way, children can learn to use the internet responsibly, gaining knowledge and skills while avoiding risks that could negatively impact their mental health and relationships.
