A tragic boating accident at Bargi Dam in Madhya Pradesh has claimed the lives of more than a dozen people after a tourist cruise boat capsized during a sudden storm. The incident has raised serious concerns about safety measures and emergency preparedness, as rescue teams continue operations and authorities launch an investigation.
Sudden Storm Leads to Boat Capsize
The incident occurred on Thursday, April 30, at approximately 6:13 p.m., when a tourist cruise boat was navigating the Bargi Dam reservoir on the Narmada River. The vessel, carrying around 43 passengers and crew members, was caught in a sudden and intense storm accompanied by strong winds. According to reports citing local officials, the unexpected weather conditions caused the boat to overturn and sink rapidly, leaving passengers in a desperate struggle for survival.
Tourism Department Vessel Involved
The ill-fated boat, identified as “Narmada Queen,” was operated by the Madhya Pradesh tourism department. Authorities confirmed that the vessel capsized mid-reservoir, making rescue efforts more challenging due to the depth and spread of the water body. Questions have been raised regarding the preparedness of the crew and the availability of safety measures on board.
Rescue Operations and Recovery of Victims
Rescue teams, including personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), were immediately deployed to the site. On May 1, multiple bodies were recovered from the reservoir. Among the victims were 39-year-old Marina Massey and her four-year-old son Trishaan, who were found holding each other while wearing life jackets, highlighting the emotional toll of the tragedy.
Additional Casualties Identified
Further recovery operations on May 2 led to the discovery of more victims. Among them were 45-year-old Kamraaj, his wife Kakujhari, and their two young sons aged six and nine. The family’s nine-year-old nephew, Mauryan, was also confirmed dead. These heartbreaking losses have intensified grief among families and communities affected by the incident.
Survivor Accounts Raise Safety Concerns
Eyewitness footage from inside the boat captured the chaos as water began entering the vessel, with passengers screaming in panic. Survivors have alleged a lack of adequate safety measures. One survivor, Julius, stated that life jackets were distributed only after the boat began sinking. He also claimed that passengers had urged the operator to turn back due to worsening weather, but their warnings were ignored. Julius lost his wife in the tragedy, while his daughter and grandson remain missing.
Investigation Into Safety Protocols Begins
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials are examining whether proper safety protocols were followed and if negligence contributed to the disaster. The probe will also assess the response of the crew and the preparedness for emergency situations during adverse weather conditions.
