June 2, 2026
The IPL 2026 trophy may have slipped away from Rajasthan Royals, but for 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the season turned into a dream campaign that cricket fans will remember for years.
At an age when most teenagers are focused on school exams and sports at the local level, Sooryavanshi dominated the world’s most competitive T20 league, breaking records, collecting awards, and emerging as the undisputed breakout star of IPL 2026.
By the end of the tournament, the young batter had not only won the prestigious Orange Cap but also secured the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, Emerging Player of the Season award, Super Striker of the Season honor, and Super Sixes of the Season recognition. His extraordinary performances transformed him from a promising youngster into one of the biggest names in Indian cricket.
A Season Filled With Records
Representing Rajasthan Royals, Sooryavanshi delivered one breathtaking innings after another throughout the season.
In 16 matches, he amassed an incredible 776 runs, scoring at a staggering strike rate of 237.30, numbers rarely seen even among the world’s most experienced T20 batters.
His explosive batting placed him at the top of the tournament’s run-scoring charts, making him the youngest player ever to win the Orange Cap.
The previous youngest Orange Cap winners were considerably older. Gujarat Titans batter Sai Sudharsan won the award in 2025 at 23 years and 231 days, while Shubman Gill had previously held the record at 23 years and 263 days. Sooryavanshi shattered those marks at just 15 years and 65 days.
First-Ever Double Achievement
One of the most remarkable achievements of the season was Sooryavanshi becoming the first player in IPL history to win both the Most Valuable Player award and the Emerging Player award in the same season.
The rare double honor highlighted not only his consistency but also the immense impact he had on Rajasthan Royals’ campaign.
His performances helped Rajasthan reach the playoffs and remain among the strongest teams throughout the tournament. Although their journey ended with a defeat against Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 at New Chandigarh, Sooryavanshi’s contribution remained the biggest talking point of the season.
Breaking Chris Gayle’s Long-Standing Record
For years, Chris Gayle’s record of 59 sixes in a single IPL season was considered one of the toughest batting milestones to surpass.
Sooryavanshi had other plans.
The fearless teenager smashed an astonishing 72 sixes, creating a new IPL record for the most sixes in a season.
His ability to clear boundaries at will made him one of the most feared batters in the competition. Bowlers often struggled to find answers as he attacked from the very first ball, regardless of the opposition or match situation.
His aggressive style also helped him achieve another rare feat.
He became the first player since Chris Gayle in 2011 to finish a season as both the leading run-scorer and the batter with the highest strike rate among players facing at least 20 deliveries.
Three Nervous Nineties
While Sooryavanshi managed one century during the season, he came heartbreakingly close to adding several more.
The youngster was dismissed on:
- 93 against Lucknow Super Giants
- 97 in the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad
- 96 in Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans
Had he converted those scores into centuries, he would have equaled Virat Kohli’s record of four centuries in a single IPL season.
Even so, his ability to repeatedly produce match-winning knocks demonstrated maturity well beyond his years.
Fastest Route to 1,000 IPL Runs
Another major milestone arrived during the season when Sooryavanshi crossed 1,000 IPL career runs.
He achieved the landmark in just 440 balls, setting a new record and surpassing West Indies power-hitter Andre Russell.
In terms of innings played, he became the second-fastest player to reach the milestone, doing so in only 23 innings. The all-time record remains with Shaun Marsh, who reached 1,000 IPL runs in 21 innings.
The Car He Can’t Drive
Among the many rewards handed out during the IPL awards ceremony was a brand-new Tata Sierra SUV, presented to Sooryavanshi after winning the Super Striker of the Season award.
However, there is one small problem.
The teenager is still too young to drive.
India’s legal driving age is 18, meaning the 15-year-old sensation will have to wait another three years before taking the wheel of his prize vehicle.
The amusing situation quickly became a talking point among fans on social media, adding another memorable chapter to his remarkable season.
From Bargain Buy to Superstar
Rajasthan Royals invested just ₹1.10 crore to secure Sooryavanshi during the mega auction before last season.
At the time, many viewed it as a gamble on future potential.
Today, it looks like one of the smartest investments in IPL history.
The teenager rewarded the franchise with performances that far exceeded expectations and established himself as one of the league’s most valuable players.
His rise also reinforced Rajasthan Royals’ reputation for identifying and nurturing young talent.
How Much Did He Earn?
Sooryavanshi’s outstanding season was not only successful on the field but also financially rewarding.
His earnings included:
- Annual Rajasthan Royals contract: ₹1.10 crore
- Match fees: ₹7.5 lakh per match
- Total match fees from 16 games: ₹1.20 crore
- MVP Award: ₹15 lakh
- Orange Cap: ₹10 lakh
- Super Striker of the Season: ₹10 lakh
- Super Sixes of the Season: ₹10 lakh
- Emerging Player of the Season: ₹10 lakh
In addition, he collected multiple individual match awards throughout the tournament, each carrying cash rewards.
When all payments, bonuses, and award prizes are combined, Sooryavanshi’s total earnings from IPL 2026 are estimated to have exceeded ₹2.5 crore.
A Star for the Future
Despite missing out on the IPL trophy, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi arguably achieved something even more significant.
He captured the imagination of cricket fans across the world.
At just 15 years old, he broke records once considered untouchable, outperformed some of the biggest names in the sport, and established himself as one of cricket’s brightest young talents.
If IPL 2026 was merely the beginning of his journey, Indian cricket may be witnessing the rise of a once-in-a-generation superstar.
